How to start working out at home
1- Choose your poison!
First, decide what kind of home workout you want to do. Do you prefer calisthenics (bodyweight exercises), free weights (dumbbells), resistance bands or even having your own home gym equipment?
The great thing about home workouts is that you can use anything in order to improve your strenght and fitness level. If you’re pressed for space or money, you can easily get started with calisthenics: you have no idea how much better you can feel with just a few push ups, squats and pull ups here and there.
If you want to go the bodyweight route, we really recommend you to purchase some kind of pull up bar. Nowadays it’s very easy to find removable ones, so space shouldn’t be an excuse!
On the other hand, you can even create your own home gym if you want to and have the space for it. From resistance bands (a great next step after calisthenics) to other tools such as kettlebells or even your own barbell set, there’s no limit to what you can do in your own home.
2- Decide upon your goals
Once you’ve picked the home workout that suits your needs, it’s time to decide what do you want to achieve. You can go for fitness and health or maybe a bit more aesthetic goals.
If you like calisthenics, most likely your goal will be just getting in shape and feeling better overall. But if bodybuilding is more your style, you might want to consider resistance bands or home gym equipment.
The great thing about home workouts is that they’re very versatile and adaptive to your needs: you can adjust them so that they fit any goals, from getting healthy and leaner to gaining muscle mass using bodyweight exercises (even though the last one can be pretty hard if you don’t know what you’re doing!).
Of course, if you’re just trying to lose weight/fat, you can definitely do so while working out at home, too. Things like HIIT and strength training can be your greatest ally in that sense.
And if you’re just trying to stay in shape and keep yourself off the couch, home workouts are perfect for that as well. Even if you have a busy schedule, home exercises like burpees or jumping jacks can be done anywhere and anytime!
3- Prepare your workout plan
If you’re just starting out, you’ll want to have a clear fitness plan for your first few weeks or months. This will help you stay on track and make the most of your time, as well as taking you closer to the kind of body and health level you’re looking for.
We really recommend picking a bodyweight routine to start with, especially if you’re just starting out. This type of home workout is perfect for beginners because it doesn’t require any equipment (other than maybe a pull up bar, as we already mentioned), and can be done anywhere.
You can also use home workout apps like Hypefive to help you track your progress and stay on top of things; as well as for finding specific challenges you want to try and a supportive community that can help you keep working out when things get hard. And if you’re just starting out, they for sure will!
4- Stay small and keep improving!
When you start working out at home, it’s very easy to overestimate your abilities and start doing things you’re not ready for. When it comes to home workouts, this can lead to a lot of frustration, injuries and even quitting altogether.
This is why we recommend starting small: do just a few repetitions of each exercise at first (or even one!) and then slowly progress as you feel more comfortable with what you’re doing. Remember, home workouts are about getting better each and every day, not beating yourself up because you can’t do a million push ups from the get-go.
Progressing steadily is the key to success when it comes to home workouts: if you try to do too much, chances are you’ll burn out pretty quickly and give up.
So start small, keep improving and have fun! Home workouts are a great way to get in shape and feel better about yourself, so make the most of them!

A home workout is a great way to get in shape, but if you’re just starting out chances are it will be pretty hard for you.
